Track Prep: An E36 M3 Winter Project

My friend Jay is an avid car enthusiast. I know, it’s probably one of the most overused terms out there, but I actually have proof to bring a bit of honor back into the label. To me, an avid car enthusiast doesn’t just know one chassis inside and out – they love getting tech-y with (and owning) different models and makes. Simply put, avid car enthusiasts LOVE cars. Going back to Jay specifically, each of the cars in his garage can make your jaw drop. You can really get a sense that he’s put in some serious hours not only wrenching, but researching everything he knows down to the smallest detail. Here’s a peek at his other garage toys:

Enough said. But recently, he’s retired his monster S4 from track duty in favor of his new-ish-ly acquired E36 M3. Before I get into the good stuff (which is already in progress), here are some before pics so you can remember what the car looked like:

The Plans:

“Mild” Gut/lighten

4 or 6 pt cage

Corbeau Seats

Harnesses

Complete rear suspension overhaul

Powerflex Subframe bushings

AKG RTABs

Bimmerworld Pocket reinforcements

SPC Camber Arms w/Spacers

All Ball Joints

Inner Bushings

Diff Bushings

Ground Control Track/School C/O’s

Subframe reinforcements

Complete front suspension overhaul

More “cleaning up” of the cooling system

Here are some pics of the initial carnage:

Stay tuned for more on Jay’s project or keep up with it in real time here!
