OK I was half right!

It looks like Peter Sauber will have to wait a bit longer to see if he can save his team.

Today’s announcement from the FIA confirms that there will be a Lotus Cosworth on the grid for 2010, but contrary to my suggestion that it would be based around BMW Sauber, the team will be a new start-up based at the Racing Technologies Norfolk facility and with Mike Gascoyne as the Technical Director. This is a huge blow to the BMW Sauber operation. The FIA stated that they were impressed with the BMW proposal, but uncertainty over ownership meant that they would not get the 13th place. The FIA has, however given them a potential 14th place on the grid ie they are first in the queue if Toyota or Renault pull out and also if they get the teams to agree to a 14 team grid. Given Ferrari Chairman Luca de Montezemolo’s comments on wanting to have three cars per team (presumably in order to keep their many contracted drivers occupied!) it seems unlikely that FOTA would support this.
